MOVIE REVIEW: DARK RIDE

I SAW THIS MOVIE BEFORE, IT WAS CALLED THE FUNHOUSE
I guess there really is not much left in the way of originality in Hollywood these days. Even though "Dark Ride" is from 2006, "The Funhouse" was from 1981. They basically took the idea of "The Funhouse" and just added the escaped mental patient angle, which by the way, was also stolen from the horrendous remake of "Black Christmas" , ironically released in the same year 2006. In fact, the scene in the mental institution, where the orderlies are taunting the "monster" has been done ad nauseum. Basically everything else was ripped off from Dean Koontz (Owen West)' s 1980 novel "The Funhouse" which was made into an instant horror classic by Texas Chainsaw Massacre's Tobe Hooper. Though arguably, the book "The Funhouse" by Dean Koontz (Owen West) is far better than the movie and quite frankly, makes more sense. I feel that Tobe Hooper really missed the boat on making "The Funhouse" everything that it could have been, by omitting so much of the backstory and yet leaving all of these loose ends and unanswered questions. That being said, I still think it is a horror/slasher classic. i would love to see someone properly remake "The Funhouse", base it more on Dean Koontz (Owen West)'s book and not the movie. But I digress... " Dark Ride" even featured a character called "Liz" just like in the "The Funhouse".
Unlike " The Funhouse" this was a very noticeable and cheap knockoff. A group of friends decide to spend the night in a Funhouse and they die at the hands of a masked monster.. There is a creepy old barker, there is the story of two brothers, one was a Mongoloid ( just like Gunther in "The Funhouse". They slightly spun that one a bit. Instead of the other brother being dead in a jar, as in "The Funhouse", the other brother was alive and just happened to be one of their friends. His revelation that he was the brother of the serial killing, murderous, mask wearing psychopath, was supposed to be the surprising, red herring, plot twist. However, it wasn't as you saw it coming from a mile away. Also, ( HUGE continuity issue) the fact that he said he was related to the twin teenage girls in the beginning (his cousins) made absolutely no sense? Especially because the twin girls clearly did not know him or the barker and had never been on the "Dark Ride" before.
Besides the whole plot being stolen and regurgitated, "Dark Ride" was a long trip into snooze town. You'd be much better off spending your precious time, watching a true horror classic like "The Funhouse" than wasting your time watching a cheap and pathetic knock off like "Dark Ride".
The worst part, was that it really wasn't intense or even remotely scary.
For me, the biggest draw, was the super hot and sexy David Clayton Rogers (Nashville (TV Series),Jane by Design (TV Series) , and the gay camp Boys Life 4: Four Play ). It also featured Jamie-Lynn Sigler (Guys with Kids (TV Series) ,Ugly Betty (TV Series) ,The Sopranos (TV Series) and Entourage (TV Series) .
If you are going to take a "Dark Ride" into horrortown, you might want to look for another ride.
