MOVIE REVIEW: HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY

GET OUT THE CHEESE WHIZ FOR...
"The House By The Cemetery"
Where do I begin to explain this literal cheese fest?
Is it a slasher movie, a ghost story, a Frankenstein. (err I mean Freudstein) or just a very strange paranormal movie? It starts off as a slasher movie, with a young woman's bare breasts, popping right in your face. It then, just changes to a haunted house story, to a ghost story and back to a slasher film again. Fans of infamous Italian horror director Dario Argento, will probably enjoy some of the blood soaked scenes, music and cinematography of director Lucio Fulci , that strongly resemble some of his best works. Anyway, lets delve into this assorted cheese platter, shall we?
The house is not by the cemetery, it IS the cemetery. The fact that anyone would want to live in a creepy old Victorian mansion, that not only is built over and around a cemetery, but actually has people buried in tombs inside is beyond me? When Mrs. Boyle's husband nonchalantly explains that in the winter in Boston, the ground is too cold and hard "like a rock" outside to bury the dead outside, so they just buried their dead inside instead. Stating that "many old homes around here do it", she simply accepts it. Yet, just minutes before she finds the dusty old tomb in the middle of her living room, the basement door almost shook itself off of the hinges, leaving poor Mrs. Boyle to let out, not one, but two long , bloodcurdling screams of terror. When Professor Boyle returns home from work, she is curled up in a ball by the tomb in her living room, crying in hysterics. It takes only mere seconds to regain her composure and to just calmly accept her husband's explanation. My question is, why the hell didn't she say "oh and by the way, something very evil is living in our basement?". The vampire bat scene is long and hilarious. The bat looks so fake and there is so much blood, that it is just laughable. Another question comes to mind, why if the mother, Mrs. Boyle is "on vacation" at home, basically doing nothing all day, except a little light sweeping and finding tombs in her living room, would they need to hire a creepy young babysitter, who by the way, looks a lot like 80's pop icon Laura Branigan ( God rest her soul)? The director, Lucio Fulci , must think that we can't be trusted as viewers to remember something from just mere minutes ago, so they have to keep flashing back and forth. Yes, we get it, the house is the same picture as the one in their house in New York. Yes, the little girl is the same creepy little girl in the window in the picture in New York, when they arrive in Boston. Yes, the babysitter looks exactly like the creepy mannequin in the store window. It's like the director must think we are morons? The Professor ( Mr. Boyle) hears very strange noises in the night, so he goes to check on his sleeping son, who is peacefully, fast asleep in a fetal position, but that doesn't stop him from doing something completely unnecessary and a bit strange. He totally pulls back the sheets, pulls his legs down and re-positions him before pulling the sheets back up over him? I mean, was that really necessary? He acts like he wants to keep the child peacefully sleeping, but yet, as he hears another strange noise, he runs out of the bedroom slamming the door? Like that wouldn't wake the kid? Let's talk about this strange kid for a minute. From the very second he opens his mouth , it is disturbing. Yes, I know it is an Italian film dubbed in English, but why would they use an adult's voice instead of a child's? It is just off-putting. It reminds me of the bad adult for a child's voice, overdub in Halloween II . I always thought that it was strange in the flashback. Anyway, Professor Boyle finds the creepy Laura Branigan lookalike, trying to pry open the basement door that is boarded up and nailed shut, which won't do her any good anyway, since the door needs a key and then a strong man and a knife to pry the old rusty lock open (and later, an axe). The good professor doesn't even say "WTF are you doing, trying to pry open my doors in the night, waking the whole house up"? They just exchange strange looks without a sound, with close up shots of the eyes, which remind me of a music video from the 80's. How about the next morning when the creepy, Laura Branigan look alike, babysitter is on her hands and knees trying, not so obviously, to clean up a ton of blood from the massacre of the realtor, Mrs.Gittleson ? Mrs. Boyle does not even raise an eyebrow about the blood fest in front of her. The babysitter throws her off any possible questioning by simply saying "I made coffee" which seems like a good enough explanation for the carnage in her kitchen for Mrs. Boyle??? Well for no apparent and never explained reason, the professor burns the only recorded evidence of Dr. Freudstein 's bloody history. The mysterious and creepy babysitter, who you are led to think has something to do with everything, I guess actually does not, and meets her foreshadowed fate (as the decapitated mannequin in the store window, from earlier in the movie). We see very cheap and cheesy light up eyes in the dark basement, that are laughable, at best.
There was never an explanation for Bob's creepy girlfriend, that obviously was the ghost of the slaughtered Freudstein family.
Eventually you get to meet Dr. Freudstein , who is just barely alive and looks more like a space alien from Doctor Who, than an undead denizen. When he is stabbed by professor Boyle, it's stew and maggots for everyone.
Lots more gore, blood, bad acting and then the ghost of Mrs. and May Freudstein appears and little Bob walks away with them, hand in hand without a care after the brutal slaughter of his parents??? The sad thing is that even a three year old, could have totally kicked Dr. Freudstein 's ass, as he could barely walk, only had one arm and was basically dead.
So, if you like watching 90 minutes of steamy Italian cheese, and don't care that nothing you watched makes any sense or has much of an explanation, then "The House By The Cemetery" is waiting.. for YOU!

TV SHOW REVIEW: SLASHER FINALE

TV SHOW REVIEW: SLASHER FINALE

SLASHER FINALE A PREDICTABLE DUD?
Well, I hate to say that i was right, but I WAS right. I guessed The Executioner from the very first episode. It was one of the people who seemed the least likely to be the killer and the one who seemed to have no motive.
If you were looking for any great unmasking or reveal, you'll be disappointed. The whole Season or is it Series finale? is about the killer. However, there really is no really motive for the killings or the Biblical 7 Deadly Sins. In a town full of sinners and only 7 sins to kill for, what's a psychotic maniac to do?
I hate when you watch a whole series just to be left high and dry at the end. "Slasher" was just like "Scream The TV Series" and "Scream Queens".. Very predictable killers and very sad and lukewarm finales. It makes you feel duped and a little angry for wasting your time, loyally and religiously watching a show that really doesn't give back even half the effort, that the viewer themselves put into it. I think we the viewers are owed more for our loyalty and commitment to a show like "Slasher".
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show and I enjoyed the ride but in the end I really don't feel like my time was well spent.

I wish "Slasher" would have been better written and produced. It needed a stronger, more involved story line that actually made sense. I just don't think there was any real justification for any of the murders except for the ones made by the original executioner, Tom.

The ending was a total joke. I don't think anyone is going to care to see how that little girl grows up to be a twisted psychopath...but If this was only the Season finale and not the Series finale, then I guess we are in for another season of "Slasher". The funny thing is that I'll probably watch it, despite my utter disappointment in this first season.

RECORD REVIEW: "Fly: Songs Inspired By The Film Eddie The Eagle"

THE 80'S ARE FRESH AND ALIVE ONCE AGAIN!!!
If you are late to the party and totally missed the boat on this amazing soundtrack album, then it bears repeating!

"Fly: Songs Inspired By The Film Eddie The Eagle" is one of the most incredible albums you will hear this year, maybe even this lifetime! 14, BRAND NEW,tracks of retro 80's brilliance on one CD.

Filmmaker Matthew Vaughn and Take That’s Gary Barlow are continuing their collaborative relationship with the movie "Eddie The Eagle", for which Barlow has created a soundtrack of 14, BRAND NEW, original songs recorded by a virtual Who’s Who of pop acts who ruled the British (and, on occasion, American) charts the 1980s.

The cream of the crop of 80's megastars, have graced this compilation album with incredible, original tracks that are upbeat, inspiring and uplifting. It feels like the soundtrack to a movie like "Fame" or "Flashdance".

All your favorites are here like..Holly Johnson (Frankie Goes To Hollywood) ,Howard Jones , Marc Almond ( Soft Cell), Tony Hadley (Spandau Ballet), “Midge Ure ( Ultravox), Nik Kershaw, ABC,Kim Wilde, Andy Bell ( Erasure), Go West, Heaven 17 ,Paul Young, “People Like You” Taron Egerton and Hugh Jackman, “Thrill Me” ( written by Gary Barlow (Take That) and OMD’s Andy McCluskey.)

What a feeling you will get, when you hear your favorite 80's artists sounding as superb as ever. Track after track, you'll swear you are back in the grand old 80's again. Trust me, after just one listen you'll never want to leave!

Take That’s Gary Barlow is a musical genius. His breathtakingly amazing production makes the magic of the 80's come alive in vivid sound and full color!

If you only buy one CD this year, be sure to make it "Fly: Songs Inspired By The Film Eddie The Eagle" . You'll be glad that you did!

MOVIE REVIEW: SUSPENSION

YOU'RE SUSPENDED..FOR LIFE!
This one needs to be filed under WTF did i just watch???
I don't know if lack of continuity or explanation, is some new ,cool way in filmmaking these days, or I did I just not get the memo? But "Suspension" is seriously lacking in both.

"Suspension" ( a.k.a " Dead of Night) is a horror /slasher film on ADHD. The movie bounces around so much, it's really hard to tell what is actually going on.

The plot is twisted but not in the way you might think, it's just messed up and really makes no sense.

Years ago, a father brutally murdered his son and eight other people. Now x amount of years later, he is back to finish what he started.

The premise reminds you of a really morbid version of the popular childhood book and animated TV series "Simon in the Land of Chalk Drawings" meets the movie " Sin City".

A good deal of the film is in black and white but with just a splotch or two of vivid color, hence looking like "Sin City".

From what I could gather, the surviving daughter is traumatized by the horrific childhood memories of her father. She draws these bloody and murderous comics of people who either bullied her or looked at her the wrong way, and then her drawings start to come true. You'll find yourself believing that she is possibly a psychic, until you figure out what is more likely, the extremely predictable plot twist.

"Borrowing" the complete serial killer ensemble from "The Hills Run Red", daddy is home to tie up loose ends.

It is a clever, but not very original idea. If you can get past the appallingly bad acting and wade through all the inconsistencies, then it might prove to be a somewhat enjoyable movie.

A few questions, if "daddy" breaks through the locked and chained front door more than once, basically ripping it off it's hinges, then how is the door still intact, when he breaks through it again? Why would "daddy" need to trap them in the basement, when he knows that the window to the outside is already wide open, since they crawled through it before?

Who actually died, other than the obvious, and where is dear old dad?

Also, why did the deputy decide to go deep sea gut diving in poor old Mr. Robinson? WTF was that about? His character's disturbing actions had literally NO explanation???

Like a lot of horror films in this particular genre, "Suspension" is a big ole can of extra strength cheese whiz.

At the end, you will feel like there is just too many loose ends, inconsistencies and unexplained events, to have truly enjoyed the film.

I guess if you think about it a bit, there is an a ha moment, that is reminiscent of "The Sixth Sense". Though, I can't be sure without watching it again, if the people who made this movie were even that clever. Perhaps it is just wishful thinking on my part?

I get what extremely vague explanation they give you at the end, but it is so over the top and unbelievable, that you have to wonder if the people who made this movie were on some pretty powerful drugs?

I think they should strongly consider renaming "Suspension" to "Expelled"!

MOVIE REVIEW: CLOWN

I'M NOT CLOWNING AROUND WHEN I SAY "CLOWN" IS A BIT OF A JOKE!
Eli Roth, made famous for the torture porn classic "Hostel", has made a movie about a possessed, child eating clown. Sound original? Trust me , it's not. From the first frame to the last, it feels like you are watching one big, long , extended episode of "The Twilight Zone" or "Takes From The Darkside". There is nothing new, unique or exciting here. There is absolutely zero character development, so you could care less about any of the characters. It's too simplistic in it's simplicity, that you might find yourself dying of boredom in places, just waiting for the action to happen.

The craziest part of it all, is that "Clown" was filmed in 2012, released in the film festival circut a few years ago, is available online to watch or download and is also available on DVD, yet still they plan to release it in theaters on June 17th of this year!

Is it me, or does that seem not only redundant but completely ludicrous?

The only thing that I give this movie credit for, is tackling the very taboo subject of children being murdered and mutilated on film. Not many films have dared to go there, so kudos for the ballsy move on Roth's part.

Quite frankly, the movie is just not one of Roth's finest moments. If you are looking for "Hostel" then "Hostel" it ain't!

MOVIE REVIEW: THE VISIT

THE VISIT IS ONE TRIP YOU DON'T WANT TO TAKE
M. Night Shyamalan usually strikes gold with many of his hit movies like " The Sixth Sense" and "Signs" but " The Visit" totally missed the mark.

" The Visit" was pretty much doomed from the start, because the whole thing was filmed in documentary/found footage style, long after that craze had already faded. It is extremely difficult to watch for several reasons. The first, being one of the grandchildren, Tyler. You want to see him dead from the very first second you meet him. Who's stupid idea was it to get this completely untalented, white boy to rap several times in this film? I'd love to see this re-cut without all of that crap. Honestly, the two kids Tyler and Becca are not bad actors, but the insanely bad and annoying rap, just has to go,period! The second reason this movie was virtually unwatchable, was because it was filmed entirely by the two grandchildren who each had a camera. I would have like to have seen both kids die a horrible death and get those cameras firmly implanted where the sun don't shine.

Finally, WTF DID I JUST WATCH?? is what you will be asking yourself at the end. It reminded me a little of "10 Cloverfield Lane". I must explain what I mean. I do not think that this complete piece of cinematic garbage, could ever be compared to an incredible movie like "10 Cloverfield Lane". That being said, there are some really interesting similarities. Is it a horror/suspense thriller or a science fiction movie? The answer might shock you.
Again, as with "10 Cloverfield Lane", the downside is, that you are left with several important and unanswered questions. That in itself, is very frustrating. Because these questions remain unanswered, it makes you feel cheated.

Listen closely, don't waste your time trying to figure the movie out, because NOTHING IS EVER EXPLAINED!!!!!

The very brief and unbelievably vague "explanation" ( if you want to call it that) is pretty insulting to anyone with half a brain.

That being said, there are a few intense moments, a few funny moments and a few really disturbing moments , that prove to be pretty entertaining. I also really enjoyed the very creepy grandparents.

My advice to M. Night Shyamalan, is pay attention to what kind of filming styles are NOT popular, currently, so you won't make such a costly mistake again.

Your brother was wrong M. Night Shyamalan, about including a full long ending where Tyler once again showcased his intensely awful rap skills. It was painful enough to have to watch your movie at all, than be tortured by having to see and hear that godawful misuse of talent , yet once again.

Please M. Night Shyamalan, don't you think we have suffered enough?

If this is what we can expect from your update of the "Tales From The Darkside" series, I'd like to lead the plea in asking you to find another job.

I think that if "The Visit" was filmed regularly, no stupid kid rapping and made a bit more sense, it might have made an ok film.

I gave a great deal of thought to this but I decided to included it anyway. SPOILER ALERT
Shame on you M. Night Shyamalan for exploiting the elderly and people with mental handicaps. To compare or allude to the health problems of the elderly as being akin to alien, paranormal or extraterrestrial behavior, is just insulting and degrading to the elderly and people with serious mental issues. Point blank, it exploits the elderly and people with mental illness. Very offensive to people with Alzheimer's syndrome, sun downers syndrome, incompetence and other related issues of the elderly. It is just in bad taste

"The Visit" is one trip, you do not want to take.

MOVIE REVIEW: 10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE PUTS THE INTENSE BACK IN SUSPENSE!
Wow, what can I say but "10 Cloverfield Lane" is a non stop thrill ride.
What could seem boring and dragging for some people, is a virtual fright fest for others. I personally, didn't come down from my death grip in my chair, until the end credits starting rolling. A very fresh and clever film that dares you to try to figure it out. There are more twists and turns than a corkscrew roller coaster and enough red herrings to fill a barrel.
One word of advice, don't trust anything that you see in this film, it is one big game of smoke and mirrors. It keeps you guessing until the very end. John Goodman's stellar performance, is utterly bone chilling. Just when you think you have the movie figured out, you don't.
Is it a suspense thriller or a science fiction movie? The answer might shock you.
The only downside is, that you are left with several important and unanswered questions. That in itself, is very frustrating. Because these questions remain unanswered, what you think is going on, was probably going on and what you thought was not going on, was also probably going on as well. Confused yet? You still will be, after you watch "10 Cloverfield Lane" to the heart stopping, jaw dropping, climatic end!
